\b \cf4 \ATXht4032 Canopic\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 vases were oval-shaped containers in which the ashe
s of the dead were placed. Their appearance dates from the period of \b \cf4 \ATXht54 Orientalization\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 (seventh century BC) and their name derives from that of the Egyptian vases used to hold the entrails of a body during the embalming pr
ocess. They had an anthropomorphic appearance, initially limited to a few anatomical features of the face summarily reproduced on the lid. Later on the representations grew increasingly detailed, and at times arms were even attached to the body of the va
se. From these characteristic vases of Chiusi were developed the stone statues, representing the dead person, with a space inside to hold the ashes.\par
